چکیده

We investigate strong-coupling superfluidity in a uniform two-component gas of ultra-cold Fermi atoms attractively interacting via quasi-molecular bosons associated with a Feshbach resonance. This interaction is tunable by the threshold energy 2ν of the Feshbach resonance, becoming large as 2ν is decreased (relative to 2εF, where εF is the Fermi energy of one component.). In recent work, we showed that the enhancement of this tunable pairing interaction naturally leads to the BCS-BEC crossover, where the character of the superfluid phase transition changes from the BCS-type to a BEC of composite bosons consisting of preformed Cooper-pairs and Feshbach-induced molecules. In this paper, we extend our previous work and study both single quasiparticles and the collective dynamics of the superfluid phase below the phase transition temperature Tc, limiting ourselves to a uniform gas. We show how the superfluid order parameter changes from the Cooper-pair amplitude ∆ to the square root of the number of condensed molecules (φm) associated with the Feshbach resonance, as the threshold energy 2ν is lowered. In the intermediate coupling regime, the superfluidity is shown to be characterized by an order parameter consisting of a superposition of ∆ and φm. We also discuss the Goldstone mode associated with superfluidity, and show how its character smoothly changes from the Anderson-Bogoliubov phonon in the BCS regime

Evidence for superfluidity in a resonantly interacting Fermi gas.

We observe collective oscillations of a trapped, degenerate Fermi gas of 6Li atoms at a magnetic field just above a Feshbach resonance, where the two-body physics does not support a bound state. The gas exhibits a radial breathing mode at a frequency of 2837(05) Hz, in excellent agreement with the frequency of nu(H) identical with sqrt[10nu(x)nu(y)/3]=2830(20) Hz predicted for a hydrodynamic Fe...

High Temperature Superfluid and Feshbach Resonance

We study an effective field theory describing cold fermionic atoms near a Feshbach resonance. The theory gives a unique description of the dynamics in the limit that the energy of the Feshbach resonance is tuned to be twice that of the Fermi surface. We show that in this limit the zero temperature superfluid condensate is of order the Fermi energy, and obtain a critical temperature TC ≃ 0.43 TF...

Critical rotational frequency for superfluid fermionic gases across a Feshbach resonance.

We present a method to determine the critical rotational frequencies for superfluidity of both uniform and trapped Fermi gases across a wide Feshbach resonance. It is found that as one approaches the resonance from the BCS side, beyond a critical scattering length, pairing is so robust that superfluidity cannot be destroyed by rotation. Moreover, the critical frequency has a sequence of jumps r...

Superfluid transition temperature in a trapped gas of Fermi atoms with a Feshbach resonance

We investigate strong coupling effects on the superfluid phase transition in a gas of Fermi atoms with a Feshbach resonance. The Feshbach resonance describes a composite quasi-Boson, which can give rise to an additional pair-ing interaction between the Fermi atoms. This attractive interaction becomes stronger as the threshold energy (2ν) of the Feshbach resonance two-particle bound state is low...

Collective molecule formation in a degenerate Fermi gas via a Feshbach resonance.

We model collisionless collective conversion of a degenerate Fermi gas of atoms into bosonic molecules via a Feshbach resonance, treating the bosonic molecules as a classical field and seeding the pairing amplitudes with random phases. A dynamical instability of the Fermi sea against association with molecules drives the conversion. The model qualitatively reproduces several experimental observ...
